Frequently asked questions

Everything to know about Volumeal: honest measurement, usage, goals, subscription and your data.

General

What is Volumeal?

Volumeal is a calorie-tracking app for iOS and Android. It estimates a meal's calories and macros from a photo, a barcode or your voice, and shows the result as a confidence range rather than a fake exact number.

Is Volumeal available on iOS and Android?

Yes, Volumeal is available on the App Store (iPhone) and Google Play (Android).

What languages is the app available in?

Volumeal and this site are bilingual: French and English.

Is Volumeal free?

Yes. Daily tracking is free with 5 scans per day. A Premium subscription unlocks unlimited scans.

Measurement & accuracy

How does Volumeal estimate a meal's calories?

From a photo of the plate: the food is recognized, its portion estimated, then converted into calories and macros. The result shows as a confidence range that you can tighten by correcting the portion in one tap.

Why a range instead of an exact number?

Because a photo estimate always has a real margin (often above ±20%). Showing “312 kcal” to the gram would be misleading. The range tells the truth and keeps you from optimizing noise.

Is Volumeal accurate?

As accurate as a photo estimate allows. The difference: Volumeal honestly shows its margin as a range, instead of hiding it behind a single number.

Where do the nutrition values come from?

From recognized reference nutrition tables (such as ANSES Ciqual in France, USDA FoodData Central in the US) for foods, and from manufacturer values via barcode for packaged products.

Do I need to weigh my food?

Not for daily use. But for very calorie-dense foods (oil, butter, cheese, nuts), where 10 g changes everything, weighing when precision matters clearly reduces the error.

What is the scale reference for?

Placing a card or coin in the photo frame gives the app a size reference, which makes the portion estimate more accurate.

Using the app

How do I scan a meal from a photo?

Open the app, take a photo of your plate: the foods are identified and portions estimated automatically.

Can I scan a barcode?

Yes. Scan a packaged product's barcode to get its name and real nutrition facts — that's where the number is most reliable.

Can I log a meal by voice?

Yes. Just say what you ate and the meal is estimated right away.

Can I import a photo from my gallery?

Yes. You can import an existing photo from your gallery to analyze it, in addition to taking one directly.

How do I correct an estimate?

Adjust the portion or food in one tap: the range and confidence level recalculate immediately.

Can I track my macros (protein, carbs, fat)?

Yes. Each meal shows its macros, and the diary shows your color-coded daily total against your goal.

Goals & calculators

How do I set my calorie goal?

Use our free calorie calculator: it estimates your daily need based on your profile and goal, then you carry that benchmark into the app.

How do I calculate my daily need (TDEE)?

The calorie calculator applies the Mifflin-St Jeor formula (BMR) multiplied by your activity level, shown as an honest range.

What deficit should I use to lose weight?

Use the deficit calculator: it suggests a reasonable deficit based on your target pace, with an estimated timeline and a safety floor.

Subscription & pricing

What's included in the free version?

The free version covers daily tracking with 5 scans per day, barcode, voice input, the diary and trends.

What does Premium unlock?

Premium unlocks unlimited scans and removes the daily limits, for unconstrained tracking.

How do I subscribe or cancel?

The subscription is managed from the app, via your App Store or Google Play account. You can cancel anytime in your store's subscription settings.

Can I get one more scan for free?

Yes: once your free quota is reached, you can watch an optional ad to unlock one extra scan.

Account & data

Are my photos sold?

No. Your photos are used for the estimate and are never sold.

Is my data secure?

Yes. Your photos and meals are encrypted, and only strictly necessary information is transmitted. See our privacy policy.

How do I delete my account?

You can request deletion of your account and data from the app or via our account deletion page.

Do I need to create an account?

An account lets you sync your tracking across devices and back it up. Only necessary information is used.

Health & platforms

Does Volumeal sync with Apple Health and Google Fit?

Yes, optionally and under your control: you can sync your calories and weight with Apple Health (iOS) or Google Fit (Android).

Is my health data shared?

No. Health/Fit sync is optional and stays on your device under your control; that data is not sold.
